James Gager and Richard Ferretti set out on an unusual renovation with the help of designer Stephen Roberts, well-known in Australia for his work on Sydney’s Rockpool restaurant. Says Ferretti, “We wanted to have an apartment that felt sort of historic, but at the same time didn’t reproduce exactly what it would have been.”

Star Italian architect Fabio Novembre’s Milan haven really is a neo-baroque Garden of Eden. When the sun shines, the façade of the home looks like an illustration out of a fairy tale. But on a typical autumn afternoon, the grainy smog and drizzle manage to blur even the dazzling emerald green Bisazza tiles that are a backdrop to a front gate entwined with a metal snake. This rather menacing entry is completely at odds with the tranquillity of the space within.
